About this event

Summary content of the session:

Speakers

  • Yassine Senghor: Yassine is a Diversity and Inclusion Specialist who currently works for Stonewall, the largest LGBT charity in Europe and specialises in race and LGBT inclusion. She is the Co-Chair of the Board for Marlborough Productions in Brighton and also sits on the Board of Directors of Streatham Space Project in London. In her (limited) spare time, she enjoys reading black, queer and feminist literature and during lockdown discovered a passion for DIY and home decor.
  • Tina O'Donnell: For most of her working life Tina has volunteered and worked in the community and adult learning sectors - where the impact of power and inequality is clearly visible. Over the years, she has facilitated, participated in and volunteered on projects and activities aimed at bringing about change. Underpinning her approach lies the belief that communities who are experiencing inequality must be active participants, at the heart of the activity because this is when meaningful change occurs and inequality can begin to be addressed. When not being with people, she enjoys bird-watching, being out in the countryside and making things.

This workshop is a part of a series of events we're running in the lead up to Trustees Week on 2-6 November 2020 and as part of the work we are doing to become a more inclusive organisation.

The workshops are all FREE and aim to:

  • Provide space to reflect on board culture and barriers that prevent diversity
  • Facilitate conversation about what inclusive practice is and how to create this
  • Discuss tools and approaches to start taking action
  • Inform and inspire people from all backgrounds to believe that trusteeship is for them

Background:

Charity boards tend not to reflect the population at the large number of communities they serve. Nationally, more than two thirds of  trustees are men and the median age is 61. Research shows that 9.6% of trustees in 100 UK major charities are people from black and minority background and just 2.9% of them are women of colour. The Charity Commission estimates that only 0.5% of the trustee population is made up of 18-24-year olds. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that vast majority of charities recruit for trustees by word of mouth or personal recommendation.

These are all issues that we are looking at internally at Community Works as we recognise the work that we also need to do.

Workshops Themes

  • Session 1: Challenge and reflect on the inclusivity of your Board Culture
  • Session 2: Diverse trustee recruitment and Inclusive Practice
  • Session 3: Writing an accessible trustee role description

In addition to this campaign, we will also be holding our annual Governance Advice Surgeries and a session for people who are, or are interested in becoming, trustees.
